Scientix: The Community for Science Education in Europe

A European community for STEM education practice

The Research Institute for Technological Evolution (RITE) has joined Scientix®, the community for science education in Europe. Scientix began at the end of 2009 as an initiative of the European Commission and is coordinated by European Schoolnet, the Brussels-based network of ministries of education. It supports Europe-wide collaboration among STEM teachers, education researchers, policymakers and other STEM education professionals, and organises its work around five strategic areas, including integrated STEM education, emerging technologies, and the contextualisation of STEM in environmental sustainability and in culture and society.

Why this collaboration matters

RITE’s research agenda sits directly on the boundary Scientix exists to manage: the distance between technological development and classroom practice. Our units in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, Visual Sciences and Blockchain Technology produce applications with clear educational potential: personalised and inclusive learning systems, virtual and augmented reality environments for immersive and simulation-based training, and mechanisms for certifying skills and authenticating remote learning. Such work reaches educators only if it is validated, documented and disseminated through channels teachers already use. Scientix provides that channel, together with a European peer community capable of testing whether an approach developed in one national system transfers to another.

What RITE brings to the community

  • Applied research on AI in education, including systems that personalise learning experiences and address diverse learning needs, an area where teacher-facing material remains scarce.
  • Virtual and augmented reality applications developed by our Visual Sciences unit for immersive learning and professional simulation training.
  • Technology transfer and evaluation capacity, supporting the documentation of pilot results rather than the publication of materials alone.
  • Blockchain-based approaches to skills certification and to the authentication of distance learning activities.
  • An interdisciplinary research base spanning energy, sustainable urban development and biotechnology, offering authentic real-world contexts for integrated STEM teaching.
  • An entrepreneurial ecosystem in Cyprus, through our co-working space, business incubator, accelerator programmes and living labs, connecting STEM education to innovation practice.

How RITE will engage

  • Publish outputs from our European projects in the Scientix resource repository, with the metadata required for reuse by third parties.
  • Use the project matching tool to identify partners for Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe consortia in STEM and digital education.
  • Contribute to Scientix webinars, conferences and the STEM Discovery Campaign, presenting evidence from Cypriot pilots.
  • Make selected resources available in Greek, extending their reach among Cypriot educators.

Policy alignment

This collaboration supports the European Education Area and the Digital Education Action Plan 2021–2027, in particular its priorities on a high-performing digital education ecosystem and on digital skills for the digital transformation. It reinforces RITE’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, and aligns with the reference frameworks applied across our educational design work, including DigComp and DigCompEdu.
