ENERGISE

AI has the potential to address some of the biggest challenges in contemporary education, driving innovation in teaching
and learning practices, and, ultimately, propelling progress towards SDG 4 (UNESCO 2021). Concurrently, emerging
information technologies such as the Internet of Things, robotics, and ‘smart’ connected objects open new horizons for
industry and the energy markets. VET providers must align with the evolving technical competencies demanded by the
‘smart’ energy sector, particularly in the area of energy management (IUT Montpellier 2022).

ENERGISE brings to the surface the importance of focusing on energy management and, more specifically, demand-side
management. One critical challenge associated with Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) is the mismatch between the time
when RESs produce energy and when consumers demand it. The increase in required balancing power can be effectively
managed by utilizing the flexibility potential in demand, energy storage, and RESs, known as “Distributed Generation” (DG).
The introduction of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as households, industrial consumers, and electric vehicles
with energy storage, along with ICT in the electricity system, opens up opportunities for demand-side management in
buildings. DSM enables the modification of demand profiles to reduce the grid’s losses, optimize consumption during RESs
availability, alleviate congestion, and save energy. The project employs forecasting models based on AI techniques for
power generation from RESs, including photovoltaic plants.

Users can adjust the priority of appliances based on their preferences for living comfort and the possibility of dynamic
changes in the individual appliance scheduling. The project’s professional fields were chosen to increase attention and
expertise on the demand side, with a specific focus on programming. However, it imparts professional skills related to
energy to computer scientists, data professionals, and electronic engineers. ENERGISE helps strengthen programming
skills and knowledge of energy management while drawing attention to energy communities (ECs). ECs enable local
communities to join forces and invest in clean energy, acting as a single entity to access all suitable energy markets on a
level playing field with other market actors Incorporating ECs into VET is essential to fulfill the need for sustainable energy
solutions and align with advancing construction standards and directives (Clarke et al., 2020).

The opportunities addressed by this project are relevant to nearly all EU contexts, as there is a widespread need to enhance
VET educators’ ability to deliver programming courses using alternative and innovative pedagogical tools. Additionally, the
provision of high-quality, innovative curricula to expand the training content of programming courses can elevate training
quality by introducing new concepts, such as deep technologies (AI/ML, IoT, energy communities, etc.).
